University Drive was closed from 64th Street to Power Road for the investigation of a fatal car accident that killed 53-year-old Kenneth Jerger.
Details of the Fatal Car Accident
Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Brandon Jones said Jerger was reportedly driving a Jeep Liberty east on University Drive. He then, for unknown reasons, crossed the center median into westbound traffic. The Jeep Liberty then collided with a Budget rental truck at 67th Street. A passenger in the Jeep and the three occupants of the Budget truck had minor injuries. At this time investigators are unable to rule anything out as factors in the crash. They do not suspect the driver of the Budget truck was impaired. Deputies were reportedly called to Jerger’s home earlier that day in response to a domestic violence situation.
Fatal Car Accident Serves as Reminder to Eliminate Distractions While Driving
A recent study done by the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) showed most distracted driving occurs as a result of paying attention to outside distractions - anything that takes the driver’s eyes off the road. Of these “outside distractions,” other accidents on the road are the most common. Out of 10,166 crashes taking place during the five-month study, 1,163 were due to distracted driving, totaling 11.44 percent.
