This morning a man had to be transported to a local hospital for minor injuries sustained from a rollover car accident. The vehicle ended upside down on railroad tracks. Luckily, the man was able to be extricated from the car. Not much else is known at this time.
Rollover Car Accidents
Rollover car accidents make up 30% of all car accident deaths. And those who do survive are often left with serious injuries, both physical and emotional. While driver error can sometimes be the cause, rollover accidents can also be caused by other factors. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates nearly 95% of single-vehicle rollover accidents are caused by “tripping.” “Tripping” is when a vehicle’s tire catches on something - a curb, shoulder, or bump - that interrupts the momentum of the vehicle. This tripping causes the vehicle to pitch sideways, or in some cases forwards, into a roll.
Contributing Factors to Rollover Car Accidents
While tipping causes a majority of rollover car accidents, there are other factors that can contribute to these types of accidents. Here are some of the more common contributing factors:
- High center of gravity - high centers of gravity, as often seen in SUVs, minivans, and pick-up trucks can make these kinds of cars more likely to rollover.
- Hazardous roadways - poor road maintenance causing uneven pavement, or loose gravel, etc..can lead to tripping.
