Stryker parents and son die in head-first car crash
Sixteen-year-old Travis Stryker and his parents, James and Rebecca Stryker, were killed when a Chevrolet sedan traveling southbound along a highway north of Flagstaff, Arizona, crossed the center divider line, colliding first with a Honda sedan and then head-first into the family’s Dodge van. Travis’ twin brother, Austin, was hospitalized with injuries.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the reason for the crash is still unknown and law enforcement officials investigating the wreck, say impairment has not been ruled out.
James Stryker, 56, and Rebecca Stryker, 60, and Travis Stryker, 16, were pronounced dead at the scene. Austin was taken to Flagstaff Medical Center.
Stryker family headed to junior hockey tournament before car crash
The family was headed to Las Vegas for the Silver Stick Pacific District Regional Qualifying Tournament. There they planned to reunite with the Dallas Penguins, a junior hockey team that Travis and Austin played for.
James and Rebecca Stryker regularly attended the teams’ practices and games. Afterward, they would congratulate members of the team individually, regardless of how they played, coach Jeff Mewett said. “They’re just a very involved, very encouraging family,” he said. “Not just to their own kids, but to everybody.” The family usually took advantage of hockey tournaments to go on vacations together.
The Strykers are also survived by their daughter, Stephanie, who is a student at Texas A&M University.
Austin tweeted Wednesday that his condition was stable, and according to a memorial Facebook page for the family, other relatives were headed to Arizona to be with the family.
Mewett said Austin is struggling, as anyone in his situation would.
“He wants to be with his team,” Mewett said. “Through all this, he wishes he could be with the guys. That’s his family.”
The driver of the Chevrolet sedan, Charlotte Ramos, 38, of St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands, as well as a passenger in the sedan, were seriously injured. The driver of the Honda sedan was not injured.
