A woman is in extremely critical condition following an accident involving the car she was driving and a city bus.
Woman Lost Control of Car and Collided with Bus
According to Phoenix Police Sgt. Steve Martos, the woman was driving her classic Ford Thunderbird south on Cave Creek Road near Peoria Avenue in Phoenix when, for no reason, she lost control of the car and crossed the divider and traveled into northbound lanes. She then collided with the Valley Metro bus. The impact cut her car in half.
The woman of the Thunderbird was initially believed to be dead. She was transported as a trauma code but doctors managed to stabilize her at a nearby hospital.
Additional Victims of Bus Accident
Three people riding on the city bus were also taken to a hospital but are expected to be okay. A black Chrysler was also involved in the collision but not hit as badly as the bus and Thunderbird.
The collision is still under investigation. The identities of those injured have not been released. As of right now, the police agree it is most likely the woman’s fault.
Though it’s unclear what caused the woman to enter the northbound lanes, it is a good reminder of how cautious one must be when driving.
Distracted Driving Caused Car / Bus Accident
Distracted driving has become a national epidemic in the last few years. In 2012 alone, 3,328 were killed in crashes caused by distracted driving.
The Department of Transportation recommends drivers:
- Turn off electronic devices as well as put them out of reach before getting behind the wheel.
- Be good role models for young drivers by setting a good example and talking with your teens about responsible driving.
- Speak up when you are a passenger and you see your driver using an electronic device w§hile driving. Offer to make the call for the driver, so that his or her full attention remains on the road.
- Always wear your seat belt – they are the best defense against other unsafe drivers.
