Motorcycle drivers should stay at scene of accident
Motorcycle riders are particularly vulnerable to accidents, which is why it is important for all drivers to obey the law when sharing the road. If you are involved in an accident with a motorcycle, it is imperative that you stay at the scene of the accident.
Two lanes of the northbound 110 Freeway were recently temporarily shut down following a motorcycle crash that left a man dead and a motorist under arrest on suspicion of felony hit-and-run.
The California Highway Patrol reports the crash took place just south of Vernon Avenue in the Vermont Square section of central Los Angeles around 11:15 p.m.
Motorcycle rider on freeway swerved left, was struck by a motorist
According to the preliminary accident report, a 53-year-old Compton man had just reached the Vernon Avenue off-ramp on his 1979 Honda motorcycle when he inexplicably swerved left, striking a concrete curb, causing him to fly off the bike. The CHP has offered no explanation for the motorist’s actions. Several vehicles then hit the motorcyclist. Then, a driver of a 2002 Lexus RS300 lost control of his vehicle and hit a guardrail.
CHP reports motorcycle rider hit several times in freeway accident
According to the CHP report, after he was hit several times, the man’s body ended up on the shoulder of the Vernon Avenue off-ramp. He died at the scene, CHP Officer Cheyenne Quesada said. His name was withheld pending family notification.
The driver, a 49-year-old man from Hawthorne driving the 2002 Lexus RS300 fled the scene but was later found and arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run after CHP officers searched the area.
There is no immediate information regarding the condition of the other drivers who hit the motorcyclist.
The crash remains under investigation by the CHP.
