According to Padilla, five people were injured: one adult and four children. Two of the children suffered possible life-threatening injuries and had to be flown via helicopter to a local hospital. Semi-truck Accident Statistics
An accident is deemed a “trucking accident” when they involve large trailers (10,000+ lbs.) and other vehicles or pedestrians. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), roughly 500,000 trucking accidents occur every year in the United States. Of the 500,000, approximately 5,000 trucking accidents result in fatalities. And one out of every eight traffic fatalities is the result of a trucking collision. It’s also interesting to note that 68% of all fatal truck accidents happened in rural regions, not cities. In 2008, 66% of all fatal truck accidents occurred during the day.
How to Stay Safe
While it’s the responsibility of the truck driver and trucking company to ensure maintained trucks and disciplined driving, other drivers can help to keep themselves safe by practicing safe and defensive driving. Drivers in passenger cars should avoid trucks’ blind spots, while also observing a truck’s turn signals and passing procedures. All dangerous driving should be reported to authorities.
