  • Driver Faces Charges of Homicide in 10-yr Old’s Death

Homicide charges in crash that killed ten-year-old.

Ten-year-old passenger, Shaylon Sunna was killed the night before Thanksgiving when the driver of the car she was riding in, Anthony Curtis Johnson ll, 28, crashed into a utility truck in Casa Grande at Trekell Road and McMurray Boulevard.

Johnson was driving south on Trekell Road and had attempted a left turn - east - onto McMurray Boulevard right in front of a truck driven by Darryl Ayers, 34. Ayers attempted to stop, but could not avoid colliding with Johnson’s vehicle. The impact of the collision caused the Impala to spin, hitting another car that was stopped at the red light in the westbound lane of McMurray Boulevard.

Ten-year-old not wearing seat belt and was ejected from car

According to Casa Grande police, Shaylon was not wearing his seat belt and was ejected from the 1995 Chevrolet impala, sustaining fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The other passenger in Johnson’s car, Waylon Sunna, 9, was wearing a seat belt and not injured in the accident. Johnson is the boyfriend of the two Sunna boys’ mother, according to police. The child’s mother arrived on scene and was immediately notified of the details of the collision.

Police investigators do not believe Johnson was impaired at the time of the collision, but he was driving on a suspended/revoked license and is currently on Felony Probation for Aggravated DUI.

Johnson has been charged with one count of negligent homicide and one count of causing a person’s death by use of a motor vehicle. He remains in the Pinal County jail in lieu of posting a $10,000 bond. He was indicted by a grand jury on Dec. 4. He pleaded not guilty to the two charges at his Dec. 13 arraignment.
